What you get with home tint

Cooler sunny rooms

Heat-rejecting film cuts the solar heat coming through the glass, so west and south rooms stay more comfortable on hot afternoons.

Less fading

Film blocks most UV light, which helps slow the fading of hardwood, rugs, couches and artwork near the windows.

Less glare

Low evening sun and glare on TVs and computer screens are easier to live with once the glass is filmed.

Daytime privacy

Some films make it harder to see into the house during the day. Ask us about frosted film for bathrooms and front doors.

Why Calgary homes get so much sun

Calgary sits more than 1,000 metres above sea level, and the air is dry and often clear. Sunlight here is strong, and UV is stronger at altitude than at sea level.

Summer evenings are long. Around the end of June the sun does not set until close to 10 pm, so west-facing rooms take direct sun for hours after work. Kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms on that side are the ones that get hot.

In winter the sun sits low and shines deep into south-facing rooms. That is when glare on TVs and screens is at its worst, and when sun reaches furniture that is in shade all summer.

Window film helps with all of it. It cuts solar heat, takes the edge off glare and blocks most of the UV that fades floors and furniture.

Fading floors and furniture

Hardwood, rugs, leather, fabric and artwork near a sunny window fade over time. You usually notice it when you move a rug and see the colour line underneath.

UV light is a large part of that fading, and window film blocks most of it. Visible light and heat also play a part, so film slows fading a lot but does not stop it completely.

What one homeowner noticed after tinting

One customer had us put architectural tint on their house windows to block heat and UV and stop their furniture from bleaching. In a Google review they wrote: "The main floor stays nice and cool now and I've noticed our A/C is not running as often as it used to on the really hot days." Results depend on the house, the glass and the film, but that is the kind of change heat control film is for.

What affects the cost of house window tinting

Home window film is quoted per job. These are the things that move the price.

How much glass

A few west windows is a smaller job than every window in the house. Large patio doors and picture windows use more film.

Reach

Main floor windows are quick to get to. Second storey, stairwell and high windows take more time and ladder work.

Film type

Films that reject more heat while staying light usually cost more than basic films. Ask us which films we carry.

Glass type

Some double-pane and coated windows need a film made for them. We check the glass first, and it is worth checking your window warranty.

Old film

Old film that has bubbled or faded has to come off before new film goes on.

Privacy needs

Bathrooms and front doors often get frosted film. See privacy window film.

Send photos of the windows, rough sizes and which way they face through the home window tint quote form, or call (825) 437-0948. If you run a business, see commercial window tinting. For your vehicle, see car window tinting.

Home window tinting in Calgary

Residential window tinting is window film for the glass in your house. It cuts the heat that builds up in sunny rooms, takes the glare off TVs and screens, and blocks most of the UV light that fades floors, furniture and artwork. The film goes on the inside of the glass you already have.

We tint house windows as well as cars. One customer had us put architectural tint on their house windows to block heat and UV and stop their furniture from bleaching. They wrote that it was quick and easy and the results are worth it.

Tell us which rooms bother you and which way the windows face, and we will recommend a film. Ask us which films we carry for homes.

Residential window tinting questions

It depends on how many windows you want done, their size, how hard they are to reach, the film you choose and whether old film has to come off. Send photos and rough sizes and we will quote it.

It cuts the solar heat coming through the glass, so sunny rooms heat up less. One customer wrote that their main floor stays cool now and their A/C runs less on the really hot days.

It slows fading a lot because it blocks most UV light. Visible light and heat also play a part in fading, so no film stops it completely.

Yes. Most home films are made to keep the view. During the day you see out normally. At night, with the lights on inside, people outside can see in, just like with plain glass.

Start with the rooms that get hot or have fading problems. In Calgary that is usually west-facing rooms with afternoon and evening sun, then south-facing glass.

Most double-pane windows can take film, but the film has to suit the glass. Darker films that absorb a lot of heat can put stress on some sealed units. We look at the glass first, and it is worth checking your window warranty.

Not if you choose a lighter film. Many home films cut heat and UV while staying close to clear. Darker films cut more glare but let in less light.

Calgary winter sun sits low and shines deep into south-facing rooms, so glare is often worse in winter. Film cuts that glare. Ask us how the films we carry handle winter heat loss, as films differ.

Wait until the film has cured. Then use a soft cloth or squeegee and an ammonia-free cleaner. Avoid scrapers, abrasive pads and blades on the filmed side.

They also did our house windows with architectural tint to block out some of the heat and UV rays to prevent bleaching our furniture. It was quick and easy and the results are worth it. The main floor stays nice and cool now and I've noticed our A/C is not running as often as it used to on the really hot days.
