PPF or ceramic coating: which one does your car need?

PPF vs ceramic coating for Calgary drivers: what each one stops, what PPF costs, and when to get one, the other or both.

Paint protection film and ceramic coating both get sold as paint protection, and they are often mentioned in the same breath. They do different jobs. The short version: paint protection film (PPF) is a physical layer that takes rock chips and scratches. A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that adds gloss and makes the car easier to wash, but it will not stop a rock.

Which one you need depends on how you drive, how long you keep the car and what bothers you more: chips or dirt. Here is how we explain it to customers at the shop.

What paint protection film is

PPF is a clear urethane film, many times thicker than a coating, that is cut to fit each panel and laid over the paint. When a stone hits the bumper on the highway, the film takes the hit instead of the paint.

  • It stops most rock chips, scratches and scuffs from reaching the paint.
  • The film we install is self-healing: light scratches and swirls fade with heat from the sun or warm water.
  • We wrap the edges on hoods, fenders and bumpers, so there is no exposed film edge where rocks hit most.
  • Every film install is guaranteed never to lift or yellow for 7 years.

What a ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid that is applied by hand, levelled and left to cure. Once cured it forms a thin, hard layer bonded to the clear coat. We use Revivify nano ceramic coatings: Graphene Pro SH, rated for 5 years, and Carbon X SH, rated for 7.

  • Water beads and runs off, and dirt and salt have a harder time sticking.
  • The paint looks glossier and washing takes less effort.
  • It resists UV, oxidation and chemical marks like bird droppings and sap.
  • It resists light marring, but it is far too thin to stop a rock chip.

PPF vs ceramic coating, side by side

  • Rock chips: PPF stops most of them. A coating does not.
  • Scratches: PPF takes them and heals light ones. A coating resists fine marring only.
  • Gloss: both look good. A coating adds the most shine and slickness.
  • Washing: a coating makes washing much easier. PPF washes like paint unless it is coated too.
  • Salt and road grime: both keep grime off the paint. A coating makes it rinse off faster.
  • Coverage: PPF is usually bought by area, most often the front end. A coating usually goes on the whole car.

What Calgary roads do to paint

Calgary is hard on a car. Gravel and rock chips are common on Deerfoot Trail, Stoney Trail, Highway 2 and through construction zones, and the front bumper, hood edge and mirrors take most of it. Winter adds sand, salt and de-icer that cling to the lower panels for months. In summer the sun is strong at our elevation, and hail and big temperature swings are part of the deal.

Match the product to the problem. Gravel and stones are a PPF problem. Salt film, dust, water spots and fading are where a coating helps most. If your commute is mostly highway, the chips are the bigger threat. If the car mostly sits in a garage and does city errands, keeping it clean is the bigger job.

What PPF costs in Calgary

PPF is priced by how much of the car you cover and the size of the vehicle. Our 2026 starting prices, before tax:

  • Partial front: $800 for a car, $900 for an SUV or truck. Bumper, the first 24 inches of the hood and fenders, mirrors and door cups.
  • Full front: $1,600 for a car, $1,800 for an SUV or truck. The full hood and fenders, bumper, mirrors, door cups and headlights.
  • Full body: quoted per vehicle.
  • Add-ons: from $50, for spots like door cups, rocker panels and the trunk strip.

Our 2026 ceramic coating prices, before tax: Revivify Graphene Pro SH (5 years) from $1,299, and Revivify Carbon X SH (7 years) from $1,499, with SUVs and trucks at the top of each range. Paint that needs polishing first adds paint correction, from $450.

Which one does your car need?

Get PPF if

  • You drive the highway a lot and the front end is already collecting chips.
  • The car is new, leased or valuable and you want the factory paint to stay perfect.
  • You plan to keep the car for years or care about resale.

Get a ceramic coating if

  • Your main frustration is how fast the car gets dirty and how long it takes to wash.
  • The car mostly does city driving and lives in a garage.
  • You want more gloss and an easier winter clean-up, and chips are not a big worry.

Get both if

  • You want the front end protected from chips and the whole car easy to clean. This is the setup many owners choose: PPF on the front end, a ceramic coating on the rest of the car.

Prep matters for both

Film and coatings both lock in whatever is under them. If the paint has swirl marks or light scratches, they end up sealed under a glossy layer where they are easier to see. That is why we look at the paint before we quote, and why some cars get paint correction first. On a new car it may only need a light polish. On an older daily driver it can make a big difference to how the finished job looks.

The bottom line

PPF protects the paint from damage. A ceramic coating protects it from dirt and makes it shine. For most Calgary drivers who spend time on the highway, PPF on the front end is the first thing to get, and a coating is the next.

Extremely satisfied with the paint protection service from EXECUTIVE WRAPS. Alex was thorough, professional, and informative. I had to check if the wrap was actually there since he did such a good job on the edges.

PPF

Alex was amazing to work with. The attention to detail can’t be matched. People think my satin paint protection film is paint with how well it wraps under each panel. Highly recommend this shop for all your wraps, ppf or vehicle detailing.

PPF

The team at Executive Wraps is awesome to deal with! We had them wrap the full front end of our brand new Model Y straight from the dealership and it has held up great! Lots of attention to detail and wrapped the edges too.

PPF

I let them wrap my brand new car. It is very rare that I trust anyone with any of my vehicles, especially when it’s brand new. That alone says a lot about this business if I’m willing to take that risk and trust them.

Wrap

Absolutely flawless work. Alex brought my vision to life with my car, and nailed the work. Best wrap shop in town by far. Can never reccomend his work enough! He got the decals I've been wanting tossed on the 240sx and I'm so happy with the outcome.
